Round 6 Report

Sandringham Zebras vs Frankston Dolphins

By Trent Kniese

Round 6 has come and gone, and Frankston would be relieved it is over.

The Dolphins started with a good start in the first quarter, with Josh Begley putting one in from 20 metres out within the opening two minutes. However, that was about the only highlight of the first quarter, as the Zebras scored seven straight goals. Frankston’s Jeremy Burton and Will Walker completed the quarter strong, each scoring late in the first. Scores at the end of the first, Sandringham 7.1.43 to Frankston 3.2.20.

The second quarter was a much better display of defence for the Dolphins, managing to keep a strong Zebras side to 2.3 in the quarter. The Zebras struck first on the scoreboard before Colby Nayna kicked his first goal of the season. It came for a showing of strength from Connor Riley, managing to evade several tackles and keep his feet before handballing to Nayna who finished on his left boot. Sandringham 9.4.58 to Frankston 4.6.30 at the main break.

The seasoned Zebras pounced on the youthful Dolphins after the main break, kicking the first two majors of the third. That was quickly undone by the Dolphins’ ‘duo of Joshs.’ Josh Begley scored his second goal of the day approximately 10 minutes into the third quarter, and Josh Stern scored five minutes later. The fact that the pair had the same first name wasn’t the only thing that connected them; they both kicked a banana on the outside of their boots from nearly the identical position in the Brighton end pocket. Sandringham 12.7.79, Frankston 6.7.43 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter encapsulated the entire game, with Frankston just managing one major. Taylin Duman sent it through the sticks at about the halfway mark of the 4th.

Throughout the game, Sandringham led most statistical categories, including disposals, hit outs, and clearances. Frankston needs a bounce-back week if they want to play finals at the end of the year.

Sandringham 15.9.99
