MPNFL / VFL DOUBLE HEADER

The Frankston Football club is excited to announce an MPNFL/VFL double header to be held at SkyBus Stadium on Sunday June 9th in 2019, featuring two blockbuster games:  Frankston Bombers vs Mt.Eliza @ 11.15am, followed by Frankston vs Port Melbourne @ 2.00pm.  With the Queen’s Birthday holiday the following day it is expected a bumper crowd will be in attendance for both games.

This double header follows a number of discussions between the clubs over recent months and is hopefully a template for more of these double headers to occur in the future.  All proceeds from the day – gate receipts, food, function, outside and inside bars – will be evenly split between the two home clubs.

Frankston President Peter Geddes said, ‘Like many others I have played in both the VFL and the MPNFL competitions so it’s a delight to be able to see these two games played back to back. I couldn’t be more encouraged to see this concept kicking off.  Of particular significance is that Frankston Bombers and the Frankston Dolphins are both playing on the same day at the same venue which is a tribute to the shared heritage of both clubs.  And with Port Melbourne and Mt Eliza both being huge clubs from their respective competitions I’m sure these games will draw interest from right across the Peninsula.  Being on a holiday weekend makes the timing perfect.  I can really see this concept kicking off, especially when the lights upgrade at SkyBus Stadium comes in to play in 2020.’

Frankston Bombers president Chris Sharman said, ‘We’re pretty pleased to see this going ahead.  It’s a concept that I think can help both clubs and both competitions and hopefully we see a bumper crowd on the day.  Our reserves and U/19’s will play at Baxter Park on the Saturday and then we will have the Bombers army head down on Sunday to cheer our boys on.  We’re already in discussions to see how we can make this an annual event.  Obviously home game revenue is important for all clubs, so we think this can be a win-win for everyone and help showcase both competitions at the premier facility in the area. There will be some ripping speakers at the joint Presidents lunch and we’re already expecting 150 plus to attend that.’

Mt.Eliza President Mic Dunne commented, ‘The future of football on the peninsula will benefit immensely from this concept and hopefully in the future these  games will be part of our football calendars. The MEFNC is proud to be part of the inaugural double header concept and we thank the Frankston Dolphins Football club and Frankston Bombers Football netball club for their support of the concept.’

Frankston senior coach Danny Ryan has been a key supporter of this concept.  ‘Clearly we draw most of our players from this area and there is a lot of pride from those players in the clubs they originate from.  There is already a bit of niggle between the players from these clubs like Mullane vs Harnett.  In my role I’ve been really clear about the importance of our relationships with MPNFL clubs and local clubs in general.  We need each other to not only survive but for our football region to thrive.’

Stay tuned for more details in the lead up to this great event.
