Dolphins media is delighted to announce the appointment of former Richmond and Port Adelaide key forward Jay Schulz as Senior Assistant Coach for 2020. Schulz played 193 AFL games and kicked 330 goals across 14 seasons with the two clubs, forging a reputation as a courageous key forward and the premier set shot for goal in the competition.
Schulz will be the Senior Assistant Coach under Senior Coach Danny Ryan and also working with the forward group.
The union sees Ryan and Schulz reunite from their days together at Port Adelaide, when Ryan was working as the Opposition Coach for the Power.
Apart from a shared love of teaching the finer nuances of the modern game, both men are mad on their NFL and have a passion for the professional side of any elite sports team – as well as the understanding of keeping the game simple & fun to play.
When we caught up with Jay at SkyBus Stadium he said, ‘I’m really excited about joining the Dolphins. I’ve been fortunate to have a long career myself and I’ve got a passion to share what I’ve learnt with younger players. I look our here at the elite surface and with the new lights going up at the ground it’s going to a fun place to play and I hope the fans enjoy it too.’
A beaming Senior Coach Danny Ryan said, ‘I couldn’t be happier to secure some one of Jay’s calibre to help drive the development of our team and players. He was in the eyes of a few AFL clubs for a coaching role but for him to commit to the Dolphins is going to help enormously to drive the standards and learning of our group. If I was a prospective player I’d think it would be hard to find a better coach to learn your craft from.’
