Josh Newman signs with Williamstown FC….
Williamstown have added its third Frankston Dolphins player of the off-season, in 2016 best and fairest winner, Josh Newman. Newman, 21, joins the club on a one year deal, similar to fellow Dolphins Jason Pongracic and Josh Pickess after Frankston were not offered a license by AFL Victoria for 2017.
The running defender has spent four years with Frankston since joining the club from the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup.
General Manager of Football Chris Dixon was rapt to get the best and fairest winner’s signature for 2017. “Josh has had an outstanding season winning the Dolphins best & fairest despite only playing 15 games,” said Dixon. “He is a prodigious talent and someone who has lofty ambitions with his football.”
“Like the other two Frankston boys that we have signed, we certainly didn’t forecast Josh coming into our program, but due to the circumstances over the last month we’ve been able to offer Josh an opportunity to continue his football development at VFL level.”
Newman’s numbers were outstanding in what was another tough season for the Dolphins, averaging over 22 disposals, four marks and four inside 50’s on the year. His inclusion to the side is vitally important given the loss of a premiership running defender this off-season.
“With Jack Johnstone departing the club we identified Josh as a similar type of player to come into our back half and provide plenty of run and rebound,” said Dixon. “He’s an excellent ball user and decision maker who is only going to add to our program in 2017.”
“At this stage 2018 is obviously up in the air for Josh and a lot of other current Frankston players due to the circumstances, but either way we’re absolutely delighted to have Josh at Burbank Oval in 2017.”
