Drafted Players – AFL

Frankston VFL Football Club has always been proud to be a stand alone club. This gives all our players the best opportunity to play great football and be noticed by the relevant powers! All of which is evident in our success over the years of having the most players drafted into the AFL.

Mark BAGUELY ** – Rookie listed (pick #47) by Essendon in 2012. The defender / on baller was recruited by Frankston from Langwarrin in the MPNFL (Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League). He debuted in Round 16, 2012 against Port Adelaide at Football Park.

Matthew BOYD ** – Rookie listed (pick #23) by Western Bulldogs in 2002. Western Bulldogs captain from 2011 to present. Boyd is the grand nephew of Australian football vendor icon Johnny Boyd better known as the (Peanut Man). In 2009 Boyd was rewarded for a strong season with selection in the 2009 All-Australian Team & winning his first Charles Sutton Medal (Best and Fairest) award. On the 21 January 2011, he was announced as the new captain for the Western Bulldogs. Boyd relished the Bulldogs captaincy and continued his good form and was rewarded with his second All-Australian selection and second Charlie Sutton Medal. In 2012, the Bulldogs failed to make the finals for the second consecutive season, Boyd won a third Charles Sutton Medal.

Chris BRYAN – Drafted by Carlton (pick #73) in 2004. Joined Collingwood in 2007. After his AFL career ended in 2009 the ruckman played in the NFL with Green Bay Packers & Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2010) and New York Jets (2011) as a punter. Currently plays with Bonbeach FNC in MPNFL (2015). AFL CAREER: 46 games – 19 goals

Aaron EDWARDS – Won J.J. Liston Trophy (18 votes) and Frost Miller Medal (100 goals) in 2006 with Frankston. Edwards of Samoan heritage was originally rookie listed (pick #9) by West Coast Eagles in 2003 from the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup competition. Edwards was re-drafted (pick #43) by North Melbourne in 2006 after becoming the last player at VFL level to kick one hundred goals in a season. Traded to Richmond in 2012.  Currently plays with Pines FNC  in MPNFL (2015).                               AFL CAREER: 94 games – 139 goals

Ryan FERGUSON – Drafted by Melbourne ( pick #66) in 2002. Spent a total of five seasons with the Demons playing 47 matches mainly as a defender. After being delisted at the end of the 2007 season joined West Adelaide in the SANFL were upon he won three Best and Fairest awards in 2008, 2009 and 2012. Retired at the end of the 2014 season after playing at Williamstown in the VFL for one season.  AFL CAREER: 47 games – 6 goals

Michael HIBBERD ** – Drafted by Essendon (pick #4 ) in 2011 Pre Season draft.  He won the Fothergill – Round Medal in 2010 as the VFL’s most promising young player.  Made his debut in round 6, 2011 against Gold Coast Suns at Etihad Stadium.

Sam LLOYD ** – Drafted by Richmond (pick #66) in 2013. Recruited by Frankston from Mount Eliza in the MPNFL. Kicked three goals on debut versus Collingwood (MCG) Round 4-2013.

Kyle MARTIN – Drafted by (pick #13) by Collingwood in 2013 Rookie Draft. Won the 2012 Best and Fairest at Frankston in his first season at the club having been recruited from Noble Park. Won two consecutive Best and Fairest awards (Joseph Wren Memorial Trophy)  with the Magpies VFL Team (2013 & 2014). Surprisingly retired from the AFL at end of 2014 season at the age of just 24. Returned to Noble Park in the Eastern Football League in 2015.  AFL CAREER: 6 games – 7 goals

Nic NEWMAN ** – Drafted by the Sydney Swans (pick #35) in 2014 Rookie Draft. Won the 2014 Fothergill-Round Medal as the league’s best young talent in the VFL. Yet to make AFL debut.

Leigh OSBORNE – Drafted by Gold Coast Suns (pick #2) 2013 Rookie Draft. Originally joined Frankston from East Ringwood in the Eastern Football League. Played just one senior match at the Suns and was delisted at the end of the 2014 season. Currently with Port Melbourne in the VFL. AFL CAREER: 1 game – 0 goals

Dylan VAN UNEN – Drafted by Essendon (pick #51) in 2012 National Draft. Recruited by Frankston from the Box Hill Hawks, Van Unen made just one senior appearance for the Bombers and was delisted at the end of the 2014 season. Currently with Port Melbourne in the VFL. AFL CAREER 1 game – 0 goals
